My Beloved Country
Kingdom of Bhutan is located in
the Himalayas between its powerful neighbours, India and China. We
call our country, Druk Yul, means "Land of the Thunder Dragon" and it
only began to open up to outsiders in the 1970s.
Our Visionary Monarchs paved ways and sown
the seed of Democracy for Decades and initiated parliamentary election in
2008 as a gift from the Dragon Golden Throne. This is one among many
celecial manifestation in human form of our Monarchs. No where in the history
had democracy instituted as the gift from their leaders. Usually, Democracies
are formed after centuries of struggles, bloodsheds and conspiracies. This
peaceful transition to a new form of government indicates that our country
is truly a heaven on earth with constant guidance and love of our
beloved monarchs. We are blessed to be born under enlightened Monarchs.
Our government is Democratic
Constitutional Monarchy with a two-party parliamentary democracy after
elections in March 2008. The first ever election gave a landslide victory to
the Druk Phuensum Tshogpa (DPT) of Jigme
Y Thinley from Nanong-Shumar constituency in Pemagatshel. DPT
was the first democratically elected government that came to power with
majority in 2008 winning 45 of the total 47 seats. People’s Democratic
Party (PDP) served as the Opposition during the first term from 2008 to
2013, with only two members. In 2013 parliamentary elections, PDP won with
majority got the mandate to serve the people as the ruling party under the
dynamic Leader Dasho Tshering
Tobgay.
Bhutan's ancient Buddhist culture and
breathtaking scenery make it a natural tourist attraction.
